Two Biden cabinet members will be in New Jersey on Monday to boost two Democratic congressmen – both allies of the White House – as they prepare to seek re-election to third terms next year.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will join Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) in Westfield to talk about a bipartisan deal on infrastructure investments for passenger and commuter rail. New Jersey Commissioner of Transportation Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti will join them for a roundtable discussion with local leaders at Westfield Town Hall.
Buttigieg is expected to take the Raritan Valley Line train to the Westfield station.
Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) will be joined in in Brick by U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough for a roundtable with Ocean County veterans and to promote the construction of a new Veterans Administration Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
“Since Day 1 in Congress, getting a new health clinic for our honorable veterans in Ocean County has been my top priority,” said Kim. “The thousands of veterans in our community deserve a world-class facility that can give them the care they need right here in Ocean county. I’m proud of our work to deliver this new clinic and am grateful for the positive impact it will have on our veterans and our community.”
Kim served on the National Security Council staff while McDonough was White House chief of staff under President Obama. McDonough raised money for Kim’s successful bid to unseat Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River) in 2018.
This is Buttigieg’s second trip to New Jersey. He toured crumbling tunnels under the Hudson River and held a press conference with members of the New Jersey delegation, including Malinowski.
McDonough will be the sixth Biden cabinet member to visit New Jersey this year. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of Education Miquel Cardona, and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge have also been in the state over the last few months.
