Volkswagen Group has opened a new aftermarket parts distribution centre in Malaysia to supply 21 Asia-Pacific countries, according to local reports.
The facility is in the free trade zone of Tanjung Pelepas, in the state of Johor, on a 50,000 sq m plot and can distribute up to 65,000 spare part ID numbers for the VW, Audi and Skoda brands.
This followed a similar move by BMW which assembles cars in Malaysia and established a regional parts distribution centre in Johor in 2017.
The opening ceremony was attended by Malaysia’s international trade and industry minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who pointed to Johor’s strategic location at the tip of the Malaysian peninsula as the key reason for the growing number of regional distribution hubs for global manufacturers of automotive, medical, electrical/electronic equipment and machinery.
VW Group sales chief Christian Dahlheim said the Asia-Pacific region “offers significant growth potential, particularly for e-mobility. Our electric vehicle product range already consists of very attractive models, such as the VW ID.3 and ID.4 and the Audi e-tron, demand for which is growing rapidly”.
