2020 created such trauma that it’s hard to believe that more than half of 2021 has already passed. The other day, I added “2020” to a file name only to realize, after I shared it, that we were, in fact, no longer in 2020! The “2020” labelling of current sport events (Euro 2020, Olympic games 2020..etc) is not helping either!
Nonetheless, the 2021 market has so far experienced tremendous innovation growth, as measured by the number of initial public offerings (IPOs). As of July 31, 672 companies went IPO on the US stock market in 2021, a +405.3% growth over the same period in 2020.
I know that you’re thinking: “2020 was a slow year!”. Think again. There were 400+ IPOs in 2020. 2020 was in fact a record year: we hadn’t seen this level of IPO volume since the year 2000!
Bottom line: if you’re a technologist trying to decipher what matters and what doesn’t, you’ll need a set of filters. In this post, I’m highlighting 4 resources that can help you find “signal from the noise”.
“Signal from the noise”: TheCube
TheCube is a free online channel that produces weekly shows that cover the trends shaping the enterprise technology landscape. I’ve had the honor of being interviewed on this program many times on the topics of Data, Analytics and Machine Learning. John Furrier and Dave Vellante are formidable hosts whose vision is to create the “ESPN of tech”. Their sign-off catchphrase is “extract signal from the noise”. That’s a good description for what you get out of the program.
Videos are typically short and to the point. I particularly enjoy the “Breaking Analysis” interviews as they are substantiated by data from Enterprise Technology Research (ETR is a technology market research firm that surveys and analyses spending intentions for 200+ publicly traded enterprise technology companies and 400+ emerging technology companies).
Take a look at this broadcast for instance. If you’ve recently asked your teams to provide you with a first half retrospective, you’ll be able to use some of the information to benchmark your progress to that of the rest of the industry (this is valid if you run your business on a calendar year, since July 2 was this year’s midpoint).
Prediction #6 highlights that 75% of large organizations will re-architect their big data platforms.
Can you beat MAD?
Another source of great “data insights” is Matt Turck’s blog. Matt is Managing Director at FirstMark at FirstMark Capital and, for the last 8 years, he has produced a piece of research that has helped orient many data executives and their team around the vast growing data technology space: the data landscape.
His 2020 analysis predicted the rise of the data analyst, the…
