Ten years ago, in the spring of 2011, Prince William married Kate Middleton, Osama Bin Laden was killed and CAP COM Federal Credit Union was named a Times Union Top Workplace in the survey’s first year.
The reason for CAP COM’s consistent success? Employees say they love working there because they feel like they’re actually helping people.
“I leave every day satisfied with what I’ve done because I know I’ve made an impact on the community,” said Jack Ainsley, a senior membership relationship officer at CAP COM’s North Greenbush branch.
“They really just emphasize it’s the members that matter,” he said.
Nicole Monast, who oversees all 11 CAP COM branches, said she keeps the focus on clients by reminding herself, “Always pay attention to the member that’s in front of you.”
That member-focused mindset is also evident in some of the benefits the company offers, particularly “VTO” — “volunteer time off.” Employees are given paid time off to volunteer with the organization of their choice.
“We really try to drive the service and advocacy aspects of what we do,” Ainsley said. And that extends beyond volunteering. For example, when the lobby was closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, he dropped off statements for members.
But the members aren’t the only important people at CAP COM.

“It’s a lot more flexible than other organizations. They really give you time off for appointments, vacations, and just the overall flexibility of my direct manager and the organization as a whole,” he said.
